Celestine Sloth Society

The Celestine Sloth Society is a non-fungible token (NFT) collection of 2,500 sloth-themed character illustrations, launched in April 2024 on Stargaze, the principal NFT marketplace of the Cosmos ecosystem. The collection is thematically tied to Celestia, a modular data-availability blockchain, and its mint was restricted to and priced in TIA, Celestia's native token. It is frequently described within the Cosmos NFT sector as a blue-chip collection, and its holder base became closely associated with the "modularist" community that formed around Celestia in 2023–2024.

Background

Celestia was originally developed under the name LazyLedger, a reference to its design in which the base chain restricts itself to guaranteeing that transaction data is available, delegating execution and settlement to other layers. The network launched as Celestia in October 2023.

The sloth was adopted as an informal mascot for this "lazy" architecture. Community accounts credit Zaki Manian, a long-standing advocate of modular blockchain design in the Cosmos ecosystem, with connecting the animal to the LazyLedger concept and with the origination of the sloth motif that the collection later formalised. The project's own social media describes its subjects as deliberate creatures dedicated to modular expansion, and its Stargaze presence has carried the tagline "the data availability ledger".

Artwork

The collection comprises 2,500 characters assembled from several hundred individual hand drawings. Artwork is credited to the artist and designer Steven Kimura, who lists the collection among his projects alongside a related derivative set, Habitats.

Tokens carry generative trait metadata across categories including body, eyes, nose, mouth, headgear, clothing, backdrop, markings and extras. The collection also includes a Laziness trait, a thematic reference to the underlying Celestia concept.

Launch

The collection minted on Stargaze in April 2024. Rather than a conventional open sale, allowlist access was granted to stakers of TIA, and the mint price was set at 1 TIA — approximately US$11 at the time. The supply sold out during the mint.

Because the sale and much of the early secondary trading were denominated in TIA rather than STARS, historical price records for the collection appear in several different denominations depending on the data source, complicating direct comparison over time.

Reception and ecosystem position

The collection's timing — arriving during the period in which staking TIA was widely pursued as a route to token airdrops across the modular ecosystem — contributed to demand. Holding a Celestine Sloth became a common qualifying criterion for allowlists on subsequent Cosmos NFT mints, and the collection's floor rose substantially above its 1 TIA mint price during 2024. Contemporaneous holder accounts describe returns of two to three orders of magnitude for early minters, followed by a decline as airdrop expectations went unrealised and TIA itself fell sharply in value.

Community and secondary sources have discussed several proposed extensions to the project, including a themed chain provisionally called LazyChain incorporating NFT staking and governance under a "proof of laziness" framing, and an associated token. These proposals are documented primarily in community write-ups rather than in primary project material, and their status is unclear.

A derivative collection, Sloth Habitats, has been released; the artist's portfolio lists a Habitats project adjacent to the main collection.

The project operates an online merchandise shop at its official domain.

Market data

The collection carries a creator royalty of 5%.

Reported figures diverge considerably between aggregators. A listing on cosmos.zone recorded a floor price of 79.81 ATOM (approximately US$123), a market capitalisation of about US$304,500 across the full 2,500-token supply, roughly 2,100 owners (approximately 85% held uniquely), 47 tokens listed and 4,070 cumulative sales, with 21 sales totalling about US$2,000 over a thirty-day period. CoinGecko has separately reported a floor of US$312.31, 2,291 owners and a market capitalisation of approximately US$780,800, while Forbes' NFT tracker has reported figures higher still. Such discrepancies reflect differences in denominating asset, update frequency and valuation method; all should be treated as snapshots.
