Babu Pengus is a non-fungible token (NFT) collection of approximately 687 penguin characters on Stargaze, the NFT marketplace of the Cosmos ecosystem. The collection is notable primarily for its abandonment: created by a pseudonymous artist and subsequently transferred and left unmaintained, it has no official website, Discord server or social media presence, and its creator royalties are understood to accrue to an inactive wallet.
Despite - and to some extent because of - this absence of any operating team, the collection has been sustained by holders and by adjacent Cosmos communities, becoming an unusual case of a project maintained entirely by people with no formal connection to it.
Description and style
The collection's on-chain description consists of the phrase "why pump" together with the formulation "no disco, no x - pur art", a deliberately misspelled rendering of "no Discord, no X - pure art". A variant of the description recorded by aggregators poses the question, in the same broken orthography, of what happens when Babu consumes all the royalties.
This orthography extends to the tokens themselves, which carry titles written in the same intentionally degraded English — one, for instance, renders as an inverted echo of a well-known superhero formulation, describing the penguins as the ones the reader did not want but deserves. The misspelling is a stylistic device rather than an error, and functions as the collection's most consistent identifying feature.
Origins and abandonment
Community accounts attribute the collection to Tako, an anonymous member of the Rekt Gang community, who is reported to have sold or transferred the project to another party. It was subsequently left without active management. Royalties are reported to flow to a wallet that is no longer in use, meaning secondary trading generates no revenue for any maintaining party a circumstance the collection's own description appears to acknowledge.
These details are documented in community sources rather than in any primary project material, which by the nature of the project does not exist.
Community adoption
In the absence of official channels, holders have organised through adjacent communities. The Rekt Gang community from which the original creator came, maintains a dedicated channel for Babu holders and recognises them with a claimable Discord role, through which holders may access community activity including whitelist opportunities. An unofficial Telegram group also operates.
A holder additionally created The Daily Babu, an unofficial satirical account covering the Cosmos ecosystem in the voice of the penguins. It is the closest thing the collection has to a public presence, though it is not operated by or on behalf of the project.
The result is a collection whose cultural continuity is maintained by parties with no ownership of or authority over it - described by observers as having become community-owned Cosmos culture by default rather than by design.
